Mission:
Advocacy for an efficient public transport infrastructure for Mumbai.

Activities:
The Bombay First Transport Committee took the initiative to work towards a standardised approach to the transport needs of the city. Many of the proposals currently being implemented are based on studies and decisions taken as far back as 40 years ago. Viewed in the context of the current transportation scenario, many have lost their relevance.

It was therefore decided to make a comprehensive study of all the recommendations made in the various transportation studies done for Mumbai since 1962, bring them all under one umbrella and recommend a phased programme of implementation, wherein maximum transport efficiency is obtained in the shortest possible time, for a minimum investment. Bombay First therefore engaged an independent consultant in the field of Transportation Planning and Engineering to carry out this study, under the guidance of the MMRDA. The study commenced in 1999 and was completed in 2000. This document, Comprehensive Transport Strategy Document for Mumbai, will be widely disseminated to the public, government agencies and the corporate sector and will be used for advocating an integrated transport system for the City.

The Project study "Comprehensive Transport strategy Document for Mumbai" has been completed by Ms. Beena Balkrishnan in association with governmental agencies, secondary data inputs created by city and transport planners in the past and in depth interviews with transport experts. The study is based on commuters' needs for the next decade, taking into account various modes of communication namely rail, road and water transport. In certain parts it also incorporates innovative ways of financing critical projects.

The newly constituted Transport Committee needs to peruse this study in depth and evolve a set of recommendations which are both practical and urgent to initiate action especially in the light of recent developments of the study alongwith specific recommendations need to be disseminated for wider in the public at large and media. This will require publication of the study in an appropriate format and length.
