Bombay First Communicates...

September 1997Bombay First uses a variety of methods to communicate to different audiences on different issues. The Mission of Bombay First is to Catalyze, Network, Facilitate and Advocate. To fulfill these functions Bombay First has developed a well designed communications structure that reaches different audiences in the city.
January 1998The organization attempts to fulfill its advocacy function through liaison with reporters and journalists on issues critical to the city’s survival and raising the public profile of the issue. Transport is one such example where prominent members of Bombay First have spoken extensively to the media on the importance of the World Bank financed MUTP II project. Bombay First has also formed a Joint Core Group which is chaired by the Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra Government and comprises of both Bombay First and Government representatives. This enables Bombay First to communicate and advocate for policy changes and recommendations concerning important areas like land use policy, transport and other areas.
July 1998Bombay First has also organized a number of workshops and seminars on issues like Solid Waste Management and Citizens Initiatives. It also organized a seminar which debated current transport initiatives like the building of flyovers in the city. Through this mode of communication it aims to fulfill its function of facilitation networking between various groups and resource persons and communicating it aims to fulfill its function of facilitation networking between various groups and resource persons and communicating important information. It utilizes networks of Citizen Groups in the city like the Citizen’s Forum for the Protection of Public Spaces (CFPPS), AGNI and other NGOs to disseminate information.
March 1999In addition, to these modes of communication, Bombay First also publishes a newsletter called ‘The City’ which is a quarterly publication. Each newsletter focuses on a specific theme which could be Solid Waste Management. Transport, Research, Land Use and Housing, Financial Services or Telecommunications.
June 1999The newsletter contains information on Bombay First activities and useful case studies of successful initiatives in different cities to give the readers a more international perspective and the sense that solutions can be found to seemingly daunting problems. The newsletter has a distribution list of more than 2000 eminent individuals, Corporate Houses, NGOs and Government functionaries in the city.
